Lifelong depression and anxiety

What is the best medication for anxiety and depression? Is depression and anxiety the same thing? What is a neurotransmitter linked to anxiety and depression? Telling someone that a substantial portion of your life was ruined because you worried too much seems no less than pathetic.


I have spent long periods in depression , and experienced periods where I have felt OK. I think of shoulder-crushing depression that leads to suicide.

However, in the last months or so depression , anxiety and panic disorder took over my life. I struggled to focus on anything thing for any period of time, from work to going to the gym, or even just a shopping trip. For most of my life I’ve struggled with social anxiety disorder, along with generalized anxiety disorder, OC and depression. During the worst of it, I was on strong medication and medical disability benefits due to my fear of job interviews.


Research shows that there is a strong relationship between having social anxiety disorder (SAD) and developing depression later in life. The generalized type of social anxiety disorder is also associated with an increased co-occurrence with major depressive disorder , panic disorder , post-traumatic stress disorder , and alcohol use disorders among others. In fact, it’s been estimated that percent of people with one mental health condition meet the criteria for two or more disorders.


There may be a biological predisposition to both depression and other anxiety disorders.

Anxiety often comes before depression. People who have post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD ), an anxiety. Traumatic stress leads to lifelong chronic physical disabilities, learning disabilities , relationship problems and emotional disorders including anxiety and depression and can be caused by seemingly benign experiences in infancy and early childhood. Currently, she is undergoing ECT. It is too early to tell if this is the answer, but she has shown improvement so far and we are at the point of stretching out her treatments.
