Symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety

What to do when you have postpartum anxiety? Should you screen for postpartum depression? What does postpartum depression feel like? What is postpartum depression period and its symptoms? Physical symptoms of PPD are similar to those of perinatal anxiety and typically include changes in sleep.


You can’t quiet your mind. Difficulty bonding with your baby. Withdrawing from family and friends. Loss of appetite or eating much more than usual. Inability to sleep ( insomnia ) or sleeping too much.


The primary symptoms of postpartum anxiety are intense worries, fears and anxiousness that severely disrupt daily life. Feeling disconnected from your baby, unable to bond. These symptoms are produced by the body’s natural reaction to real or perceived feelings of danger or threat.


For new mothers, these feelings physiological, mental and emotional reactions to concerns,. A mom suffering from postpartum anxiety may experience the following symptoms: 1. Postpartum anxiety symptoms. Dread or a sense of danger. Lack of sleep or oversleeping. They say sleep when your child is sleeping.


So when my son is sleeping , I—my mind was just still running, thinking about things. Dizziness, hot flashes and nausea. Sometimes postpartum anxiety can manifest physically. Other possible symptoms include increased heart rate, sore stomach, tight chest and throat and shallow breathing.

Appetite increase or decrease. Sleeping too much or insomnia. Multivariable logistic regression models (adjusted for covariates) examined predictors of elevated symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety. Predictors included the following: type of delivery (normal physiological vs. interventive non-physiological), immediate postpartum complications, and maternal perception of the recent birth experience.


Women suffering from postpartum depression may have difficulty bonding with their new baby or fear they are not a good mother. Common symptoms include overwhelming sadness, feelings of hopelessness, excessive worry and rumination, feelings of being overwhelme extreme changes in appetite, sleep and concentration. Additionally, postpartum OCD symptoms are often confused with anxiety or depression , so it is often misdiagnosed.

There is also limited awareness about postpartum OCD as its own unique condition. This lack of awareness prevents reporting and diagnoses. While any new mom can develop postpartum anxiety , those who are especially vulnerable include women with a personal or family history of anxiety or previous experience with depression , certain symptoms of PMS (such as feeling weepy or agitated), eating disorders, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
