Depression , anxiety and other forms of mental illness affect many people. The Kscale involves questions about emotional states each with a five-level response scale. The measure can be used as a brief screen to identify levels of distress. The aim of this study was to validate the Dutch version of the Kessler-( K) as well as an extended version (EK10) in screening for depressive and anxiety disorders in primary care. The current study examined the reliability and validity of Kessler ( K) and Kessler (K6) in screening adolescents at risk of suffering from depression.

The K(Appendix 5) measures psychological distress, particularly anxiety and depression. Used widely in population surveys and secondary care clinical settings it has been validated for use in population surveys rather than in primary care. The Kshowed expected correlations with other commonly used measures of anxiety, depression , and post-traumatic stress. Finally, they noted that Kscore (treated unidimensionally) strongly predicted perceived occupational impairments related to mental health problems (AUC of 7), which was similar to the AUC of other measures of anxiety, depression , and post-traumatic stress.

We plan to refine the calibration rules for the scales based on analysis of data in these surveys. While we all feel sa moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without any apparent reason.
