Gestational diabetes symptoms

Signs of gestational diabetes include: Feeling thirsty.

You may want to drink a lot more than you usually do. If you feel fatigue even early in the day, it may be more than the strain. A dry mouth may go hand -in-hand with your increased thirst. Without enough insulin, glucose can’t leave the blood and be changed into energy. Gestational diabetes can also start when the mother’s body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy.


When glucose builds up in the bloo it’s called hyperglycemia. Hormonal changes in pregnancy, extra weight, or a family history of diabetes also may play a role.

Extreme thirst is a possible symptom of gestational diabetes. A doctor may diagnose gestational diabetes during a routine health check. There are typically no noticeable signs or symptoms associated with gestational diabetes. Delivery of the baby may be more complicated as a result. The baby is also at risk for developing low blood glucose (hypoglycemia) immediately after birth.


This causes hyperglycemia (or high levels of sugar in the blood), which can damage the nerves, blood vessels and organs in your body. Women with gestational diabetes typically have no symptoms. If symptoms do arise, they may include increased thirst, excessive hunger, and blurred vision. These include: Increased thirst.

If you have any risk factors for gestational diabetes , your provider may suggest doing the test earlier. For some women, gestational diabetes can usually be managed with changes in diet and physical activity, but, in most cases, medications – including injecting insulin – may be needed. Your midwife, doctors, nurses and dietitians will work with you and set you targets for your blood glucose levels.


Treatment for gestational diabetes. Most women diagnosed with gestational diabetes will have a healthy pregnancy, normal delivery and a healthy baby. A healthy low-fat, low-sugar diet and regular exercise, such as walking or swimming, can help reduce blood sugar levels.


Some of the signs and symptoms of type and type diabetes are: Increased thirst. Unexplained weight loss.
