When a loved one is experiencing depression, support and positive, healthy encouragement can play. When I was struggling with my own depression, the most healing moments came when someone I loved. Exercise is especially helpful, so try to get your depressed loved one moving.


Going on walks together is one of the easiest options. Be gently and lovingly persistent—don’t get discouraged or stop asking. Pitch in when possible.

After all, depression kills motivation, energy, interest, and focus. It should simply be something that comes from a place of compassion and acceptance. Try not to be dissuaded by worry over saying the wrong thing. Feeling down or depressed from time to time is normal. But if these feelings last weeks or more, or start to affect everyday life, this can be a sign of depression.

For many people with depression, the symptoms are severe enough to cause problems with day- to -day activities (e.g., attending school or getting to work each day), but others might feel miserable or overwhelmed without knowing why. If someone criticizes me, though, anger, frustration and guilt are much easier to access.


Depressed people aren’t simply choosing to see the negatives and ignore the positives.
