Dysphoric hypomania

Can hypomania be symptomatic of anything other than bipolar? Is hypomania the same as bipolar disorder? What does hypomania feel like? Then there is “dysphoric”: The Merck Manual describes it as the restless, irritable, unhappy, and pessimistic part of hypomania , as opposed to the creative, upbeat, and “loud” features of euphoric mania.


However, some mental health professionals who use psychoanalysis as treatment may use it to describe the condition of the patient. An estimated percent of individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder experience dysphoric mania or dysphoric hypomania.

In dysphoric hypomania , this is not the classic “decreased need for sleep. Patients would love some lorazepam or zolpidem. Indee they may be perceived by physicians as “drug-seeking,” which is utterly ironic if the same physician is prescribing an antidepressant that might be inducing these mixed state symptoms. People with dysphoric mania experience the same symptoms as those of bipolar disorder — the depression, mania, or hypomania (a milder form of mania) — just at the same time.


People now refer to this condition as bipolar disorder with mixed features, symptoms. Two features of both mania or hypomania and depression may superficially overlap and even resemble each other, namely an increase in goal-directed activity (psychomotor acceleration) vs. Obviously, if these distinctions exist in mania, they are going to exist in hypomania.

My body and mind are in a civil war. Ultimately, until it goes too far, people with euphoric mania feel PAIN-FREE and GREAT while people with dysphoric mania feel UNCOMFORTABLE and AWFUL. Hypomania (both euphoric and dysphoric ) is seen in bipolar II. There is an increase in energy, a decreased need for sleep (but no daytime fatigue), and impaired judgment.


During euphoric hypomanic episodes, people have a heightened sense of well-being and are very productive and gregarious. Also called bipolar II. I’ve been hitting a brick wall when it comes to describing the concept of dysphoric hypomania , beyond the fact that it is something of a mixed state. This form of elevated moods tends to last for 4-days consecutively.


With euphoric hypomania , everything is great, but I rarely ever get those. You can experience mania and hypomania with mixed features. If you’re experiencing hypomania , your energy level is higher than normal, but it’s not as extreme as in mania.


Other people will notice if you have hypomania. There is evidence to suggest that women and AFAB individuals with PMDD are commonly misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by episodes of depression and mania, and like PMD is a cyclic disorder. But starting today it has slipped into a really miserable, uncomfortable place. Mania is a bipolar disorder mood swing that comes in two levels: hypomania and full blown mania.


Within these levels -0r intensity- of mania, there are two TYPES of mania: euphoric and dysphoric. Most of us understand euphoric. We love it, even though it is disruptive and dangerous for our futures.

But few understand dysphoric or mixed mania. The dysphoric forecasting bias was robust across ratings of positive and negative affect, forecasts for pleasant and unpleasant scenarios, continuous and categorical operationalizations of dysphoria, and three time points of observation. Similar biases were not observed in analyses examining the independent effects of anxiety and hypomania.
