Sleep phobia

What is a phobia or dislike of sleep called? Do people with sleep apnea always snore at night? Why am I afraid to sleep? Some people, especially those with insomnia, chronic nightmares, or sleep apnea, dread falling asleep.

Cosying up in bed is supposed to be the most relaxing part of your day, feeling the weight slowly lift off your shoulders and drifting off into a peaceful deep sleep… perfect. In other words, a phobia is fear that does not conform to the facts of reality. Chronic insomnia does not conform to reality because there is nothing inherent about attaining sleep that should cause fear.


The good news is that it can. But if you have somniphobia, it can be distressing to even think about sleeping.

You appear awake and deep in fear, perhaps screaming or lashing out but when awoken have little to no memory of the experience. Like other anxiety disorders, phobias are so activating to the nervous system that they make it difficult to let go of fears and fall asleep.
