Feeling depressed while pregnant

Is it normal to feel this depressed and pregnant? What causes pregnant women to become depressed? Why is I drank while I was pregnant? In fact, the feelings can continue to compound.


During pregnancy , hormone changes can affect the chemicals in your brain, which are directly related to depression and anxiety. These can be exacerbated by difficult life situations, which can result in depression during pregnancy.

Traditionally most attention has been directed towards psychological problems after the pregnancy. With hormones rising and falling all the time, stress from the pregnancy , as well as, other issues that come up, it is no wonder that we can sometimes feel blue. Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor, if you think that it’s not getting better with time.


Feeling depressed during pregnancy is not uncommon, but that doesn’t mean it’s “normal”. If left untreate it can be harmful to both you and your growing baby. Some of the risks of untreated depression during pregnancy include: A negative impact on good prenatal care.


This is especially true in the areas of nutrition, sleep habits, exercise, and following care instructions from your doctor or midwife. Symptoms of pregnancy depression include: Being in a depressed mood most of the time for at least two weeks. You may feel sad , hopeless, “empty,” and generally discontented.

No longer enjoying the things you used to enjoy. Decreased interest in the world around you. A sense of worthlessness. Being the victim of abuse: Feelings of low self-esteem, helplessness and isolation can all contribute to depression symptoms. A thyroid condition: Levels of thyroid hormone, which regulate how your body uses and stores energy in foo.


If you often feel worried or anxious, learn more about anxiety in pregnancy. You might hear the term perinatal depression to describe this situation. The word perinatal describes the time during pregnancy or just after birth. Some common terms for it are prenatal depression and perinatal depression. Some studies suggest that out of every women who is pregnant will experience depression at some point during their pregnancy.


A depressed mother will not take care of herself. In severe conditions of antepartum depression, she may have suicidal thoughts and self-harm acts. In these conditions, the baby will be adversely affected. One common cause for depression in the first trimester of pregnancy is if the pregnancy was unplanned. They may feel tire hormonal or suffer from severe morning sickness.


Like other forms of depression, prenatal depression is caused by a hormone imbalance during pregnancy. Depression during pregnancy can have the same symptoms that define major depression in the general population. Other contributing factors include morning sickness, anxieties over becoming a mother and worrying about how your relationship or finances will cope with your new arrival.

Antenatal depression is when you feel sad all the time for weeks or months during your pregnancy. The condition can vary from mild to severe and can affect women in different ways. This is called postnatal depression.


Some women have depression after having a baby.
