If you know someone with depression what it all comes back to is this: love, compassion, and empathy are superpowers. Know that and use them.

You’ll never know the difference you’ll be making. Depression can have its ups and downs. If someone has hidden or undiagnosed depression, they might seem like they get random mood swings, depending on if their depression is consistent or not.


To you (and to them, if they are undiagnosed), the changes in mood seem without cause, but it’s simply how some people’s depression manifests. Part of this is a lack of interest, and part is the fear of being the Debbie Downer of the group. This is especially true if you’re taking medication because you need to avoid any negative interactions with other prescriptions.


Remember that depression is a treatable condition, Rothschild says. Work with your doctor, stick to your treatment plan, and lean on supportive friends and family members.

It can be very difficult to tell somebody you are depressed without actually talking to them. They may mistake your attempts as general low moo bad moo self-pity or a range of other negative emotions. I personally found talking to people helpe because it have me direction and also gave them an understanding of my condition. Because depression is an invisible disease (people don’t necessary appear “depressed”), there is a stigma surrounding the disease. While depression can be in some ways the absence of action, there are still little habits, little routines, a person may pick up on when they re-enter a depressive episode.


These habits can be small indicators you’re beginning to feel depressed again. Anger and irritability. A depressed person struggles to get through the day. Ordinary obstacles and challenges become more difficult and can lead to frustration and the feelings that go along with that. This is another tell -tale sign of depression that is easy to take personally.


If you do choose to tell people that you have depression you need to be prepared for a whole range of reactions from denial, rejection, support and even over protectiveness. Yes, you need to tell people that you are depressed if you want help with your depression. Many people do not understand depression or they are uncomfortable with discussing this issue and because of this, they are not safe to tell. Yet tragically many people suffering from this illness go without diagnosis and treatment. This depression test is a tool that may help you recognize the symptoms of depression and decide to get help.


Instea they tend to complain about fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, and loss of interest in work and hobbies. Identify any suicidal thoughts.

Diagnose the physical symptoms. Reflect on any recent or prolonged stressful events. Examine your personal history.
