Having a baby with depression

Since babies learn a lot about their emotions from those around them, if a parent is suffering from depression , the baby may have a greater chance of developing it. Infants in poor or abusive homes are also at an increased risk. Postpartum depression is linked to chemical, social, and psychological changes associated with having a baby.


The term describes a range of physical and emotional changes that many new mothers. Many mothers with postpartum depression feel unable to bond with their baby or struggle with intrusive thoughts about hurting themselves or the baby.

Without treatment, postpartum depression can persist for years after giving birth. Women can experience a low mood and feel midly depressed at a time when they expect they should feel happy after having a baby.
