Cmv symptoms

What are the signs and symptoms of cytomegalovirus? Is CMV an autoimmune disease? How long do symptoms of CMV last?

Babies with congenital CMV who are sick at birth tend to have significant signs and symptoms, including: Premature birth. Yellow skin and eyes ( jaundice ).

Enlarged and poorly functioning liver. Purple skin splotches or a rash or both. Abnormally small head (microencephaly).

When symptoms occur, they are similar to the symptoms of mononucleosis: Fatigue. Low-grade fever (can last days or weeks). If you have experienced any symptoms during your pregnancy similar to a seasonal illness, ask your doctor to test you for CMV infection. Acute CMV infection may mimic flu or infectious mononucleosis caused by Epstein-Barr virus or liver infection by hepatitis A, B, or C.

Mono-like symptoms may include fever, malaise (feeling unwell), enlarged lymph nodes, sore throat, muscle aches, loss of appetite, enlarged liver or spleen, and fatigue. Areas likely to be affected are the eyes, lungs, or digestive system. Occasionally, CMV can cause Epstein-Barr Virus or hepatitis (liver problem). Symptoms may include: fever.

Sometimes it causes problems in babies if you catch it during pregnancy (congenital CMV). CMV is similar to the herpes virus that causes cold sores and chickenpox. Humans and monkeys serve as natural hosts. Others may develop a mild illness, or may have any of the following symptoms : High fever. General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling.

Muscle aches or joint pain. Swelling of the lymph nodes. Some people get flu-like symptoms the first time they catch CMV , including: a high temperature of 38C or more. About percent of all mononucleosis cases are due to CMV infection.

CMV will end up showing symptoms later in life. If present, some symptoms include: Fever with temperature greater than 100.

Most people infected with CMV have no symptoms or mild symptoms. CMV infections are very common, and most of us will probably have one in our lifetimes. In healthy kids, a CMV infection is rarely serious. Any symptoms it does cause usually are mild and temporary. But cytomegalovirus (site-uh-meg-uh-low-VY-rus).

For most people, a CMV infection poses no real health threat. The symptoms are generally mild and flu-like, although some may feel unwell for a few weeks, rather than a few days.
