Because teen depression can have so many causes and because mood shifts can be so common in teens, it can make it difficult for parents to recognize the signs and for doctors to make a diagnosis. The stress of your teen’s depression can affect your own moods and emotions, so support your health and well-being by eating right, getting enough sleep, and making time for things you enjoy. Be open with the family. Don’t tiptoe around the issue of teen depression in an attempt to “protect” the other children. As for school, it is important your teenager attend school on a regular basis even if they feel too depressed to attend.


Warning Signs Your Teen May Be Using Drugs. This is a difficult question that many parents have to face on a daily basis. Parents who spend a great deal of time with their teenagers are often tuned into what is normal behavior and what is not.

Your teen may not know how to express his or her feelings, but there are steps you can take to help. In a small number of teens, these medicines can make them more depressed and give them more suicidal thoughts. If this happens, you or your teen should talk to the provider right away. Teen Depression Help and Resources. Help your teen avoid alcohol and other drugs. Your teen may feel as if alcohol, marijuana or other drugs lessen depression symptoms, but in the long run they worsen symptoms and make depression harder to treat. Talk with the doctor or therapist if your teen needs help to deal with alcohol or drug use.

In general, you want to let them know that they are loved and supported. If you think your friend might have depression , first help him or her talk to a trusted adult who can connect your friend to a health professional.


You can also: Be supportive, patient, and encouraging, even if you don’t fully understand what’s going on. Invite your friend to activities, social events, or just to hang out. Once you air out these thoughts and feelings, turn your attention to something positive.


Take action to solve problems.

Ask for help if you need it. Feeling connected to friends and family can help relieve depression. Proceed with gentle but firm methods to persuade your teen to get help. These varied approaches have all been effective in helping depressed teens to move forward.


Educate yourself on depression in adolescents. Learn the signs and symptoms of depression and know how to differentiate between normal sadness or “ teen angst” and clinical depression. Dealing with depression as a teenager can be very frightening and confusing.
