A swollen abdomen occurs when your stomach area is larger than normal.

This is sometimes known as a distended abdomen or swollen belly. Most of the time, you can manage bloating on your own. A distended stomach is a term usually used to refer to distension or swelling of the abdomen and not of the stomach itself. When the term is used in this manner, a number of different diseases and conditions can cause abdominal distension.


Some of these conditions include IBS, heartburn, bacteria in the intestines, or constipation. More serious and rare causes for stomach swelling are blockage in the intestines,. With most people’s poor diets, high levels of stress, need for daily medications and exposure to various pollutants, it’s no wonder they’re suffering some sort of bloating more days than not.


Unfortunately, it can also mask the diagnosis of other causes, so any constipation that is lingering and persistent should be evaluated by your doctor.

Abdominal swelling , also known as distention, occurs when the stomach region expands or enlarges, giving off the appearance of being bloated. This typically happens when there is some internal pressure on a person’s organs, and many people experience some form of distention when they eat a particularly heavy meal. These terms cover the same basic symptom, physical discomfort due to expanding digestive organs. Digestive disorders and diseases cause difficulty with the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from food. Many people, particularly those with irritable bowel syndrome or anxiety, may have a greater sensitivity to abdominal symptoms and intestinal gas, rather than an excess amount.


It can cause bloating , weight gain, and a rapidly expanding waistline. The International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders reports that “IBS affects between and million people in the United States,”. One in Americans say they suffer from bloating regularly, even when they haven’t eaten a large meal. In some cases, bloating can become severe enough that it causes distention, or a perceptible swelling of the abdomen.


Bloating and gas are usually tied to what and how you eat, so a few simple changes may help. Gastroparesis: This condition causes delayed stomach emptying, which can cause bloating, nausea and even bowel blockage. Women are four times as likely as men to have gastroparesis, and as many as percent of people with diabetes will also have it. Abdominal bloating or a bloated stomach is a common and non-specific symptom that can be seen in various conditions.


It can affect individuals of all ages, races, or genders. A bloated stomach can be associated with organic disorders, functional gastrointestinal disorders, or appear by itself. The term “swollen stomach” is the general descriptions to use to mean abdominal distention or bloating.


However, it may also involve isolated swelling of any quadrant of the abdomen.

In dealing with abdominal bloating or stomach swelling , it always involves the assessment of the five (5) Fs: Flatus. There are five main causes for this type of swelling : digestive disorder, food allergies, severe hunger, indigestion, and hormone fluctuations. The severity and duration of the swelling are good indicators of the root cause. A change in your diet or not eating for too long.


Certain medications such as antacids, aspirin and opioid painkillers. Sugars or artificial sweeteners in the diet can also cause gas and bloating.
