The most common cause of a sore throat (pharyngitis) is a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu. Many times a sore throat is accompanied by a pesky cough, which can irritate the tender throat.
With strep throat , the sore throat is often more severe and persists. Tonsillitis is a painful inflammation or infection of the ton sils, the tissue masses located at the back of the throat.

I have had the same symptoms for over two weeks now: sore throat , runny nose, cough, fatigue and headache. Everytime the air-conditioner blows it tickles my throat and makes me cough.
The best I can describe the location of the pain is behind the uvula and slightly up, like where the nasal passages meet the throat. My cough is a lot more aggrivated at night when I lye down. I sleep very poorly at night because of my coughing but then I seem to sleep better during the day but I get all out of wack.
