Swelling under one eye

High sodium foods, such as potato chips, pretzels, tinned soups, salted nuts and other processed foods can contribute to puffiness under the eye. Such salty foods make the body retain water, which can collect underneath the eyes. Swollen eyes can be painful or painless, and affect either the upper or lower eyelids, or both. It indicates presence of excess fluid in the connective tissues surrounding the eyes.
